In order to ensure that your MEDIC FIRST AID training courses provide your students with the latest medical guidelines, it is in your best interest to update to Version 6.0 instructional materials as soon as they are available. There is no need for a physical, hands-on update session. The update will consist of three lessons and a short exam.
The lessons will include the following:
- 2005 CPR and First Aid Guidelines, including the new guideline, old guideline, and rationale for the change
- Changes to MEDIC FIRST AID Training Programs
- MEDIC FIRST AID instructional design refresher
To update, instructors will have two options to choose from—the online update and the paper update.
Online Update
The preferred method (easiest, fastest, and most affordable) will be to complete the update and exam online using MEDIC University, MEDIC FIRST AID’s new online training system. Using this method, you will only need to pay for your new Basic Training Programs Instructor Guide (Item # 4335 - $40), the online update is free. If MEDIC FIRST AID has your current, valid email address, you will be pre-enrolled in the Instructor Update course at MEDIC University and receive an email notification of your enrollment. (If you have not received this email by June 16 we do not have your valid email address. Please contact Client Services at 1-800-800-7099 to provide your email address, and we will enroll you for the online update.)
The enrollment email will include a link to the MEDIC University registration page. Once there, you will need to register yourself and provide a User Name and Password. After logging into MEDIC University, you will come to the “Currently Enrolled Courses” page. Here you will find a link to the Version 6.0 Instructor Update course. Simply work through the three lessons and complete the online exam. After completing the exam, you will have the option of printing a certificate for your files. To complete the update process you will need to call Client Services to order your new Basic Training Programs Instructor Guide. This is also a great time to order the new Basic Training Programs video and student packs.
As an added bonus to those participating in the online update, you will be enrolled in an online AED Refresher course. This course can serve two purposes. If you are already an AED instructor, it can help you maintain your familiarity with using an AED. If you are not an AED instructor, completion of the online AED Refresher course will qualify you to teach the AED portion of the BasicPlus course or the stand-alone AED supplement.
Paper Update Packet
If you do not wish to or are unable to complete the online update, starting May 31, you will need to call Client Services at 1-800-800-7099 and order an Instructor Update Packet (Item #1632 - $10) in addition to your new Basic Training Programs Instructor Guide. Your Instructor Update Packet will include the three update lessons, a written knowledge review, an answer sheet, and an update application. When you receive your update packet, review the lessons, and complete the written knowledge review using the included answer sheet. To finalize the update process, you will need to return the completed answer sheet and update application to MEDIC FIRST AID (fax: 541-344-7429, or mail: Attn: Instructor Update, MEDIC FIRST AID, PO Box 21738, Eugene, OR 97402). Your answers will be graded – you must answer 80% correctly to pass.
New Instructor Cards
New Instructor cards will NOT be sent out upon completion of the Version 6.0 update. The Instructor card you currently hold is good through the renewal date indicated on the card. New cards will only be issued the first time you are trained in a program (such as upgrading to AED Instructor) or on your next renewal.
Instructor Update Good for All Programs
The Version 6.0 Instructor Update gives instructors the knowledge necessary to teach using the 2005 Guidelines and updated MEDIC FIRST AID instructional design. To teach a specific MEDIC FIRST AID program, an Instructor must have the program-specific Instructor Guide and program video (if applicable). MEDIC FIRST AID courses will be released as they are updated. Projected release dates (subject to change) are:
- Trainer Guide, Summer 2006
- AED Response for Sudden Cardiac Arrest, Summer 2006
