AED Training: Don't Get Left Behind
Feb 3, 2004

You may already own or have access to our MEDIC FIRST AID AED Supplement video because it's been included in most of the MEDIC FIRST AID Basic Training Programs we've sold. As a trained First Responder, EMT, paramedic, nurse, or physician you qualify to teach the supplement. Even as a current AED trained provider you qualify to teach. If you have had AED training in the past we have a simple challenge process to get you qualified.

In the time it takes you to finish reading this article, approximately five people will have suffered sudden cardiac arrest (SCA). Many of those victims won't have any warning. If help in the form of an automated external defibrillator (AED) and a trained bystander isn't around, their chances of survival are grim. Given that SCA is a leading cause of death in the United States – contributing to about 250,000 deaths each year – something had to be done.

Fortunately, the use of AEDs by lay emergency care providers is quickly becoming a standard of care around the world. From giants of industry, like Weyerhaeuser, to professional sports franchises, like the Los Angeles Dodgers, getting AEDs and appropriate training in the workplace is no longer an option. Every day, more and more police agencies, shopping malls, athletic clubs, schools, government offices, businesses, social organizations, and even private homes are purchasing and installing these devices.

The reasoning is simple: AEDs save lives. Research has shown a dramatic rise in SCA survival rates in areas that deploy these devices. Most SCA victims die because defibrillation – an electric shock to the heart and the most effective treatment for SCA – isn't readily available.

The solution is to implement an early defibrillation program, which combines AEDs with training and medical direction. These programs have been shown, in some cases, to increase survival rates over 50 percent, twice the rate of the most progressive emergency medical services (EMS) systems, and ten times the national EMS average of five percent.

A brief reminder that in order to teach the MEDIC FIRST AID AED Supplement, you must have access to an AED training device. MEDIC FIRST AID offers both the HeartStart FR2+ trainer ($325) (#8109) and the OnSite trainer ($295) (#8131).

To upgrade, simply call a MEDIC FIRST AID Client Services representative at 800-800-7099 to see if you qualify, or to find out how. You can get a MEDIC FIRST AID AED Supplement Facilitator Guide for only $17.50, and in most cases, you can complete your upgrade with a single phone call, or visit medicfirstaid.com to place your order today.
